| Schweinfurt, Germany, a northern Bavarian city with over 55,000 residents,
is located on the Main River about a 40 minute drive north of Würzburg
and two hours east of Frankfurt. Travel a little over
an hour to the south-east and you can visit Rothenburg, the beautiful medieval
walled city. Drive the same distance to the north, and you are
in the German state of Thüringen, in the former German Democratic Republic
(East Germany). Schweinfurt is a major industrial city manufacturing
ball bearings and car parts. On the fruitful land around Schweinfurt
farmers raise wheat, barley, sugar beets, sunflowers, corn, cabbage, and cucumbers.
Northern Bavaria is also famous for its vineyards along the winding Main
River. Numerous local festivals provide wonderful opportunities to
get out and explore the area on week end. |
