Third grade students who earned 25 Reading Counts points during the second quarter celebrated by reading math stories and doing related activities.  Each class did all five activities in the morning. In the afternoon students had a paperback book exchange involving 271 books.  After the exchange they had a read in. 

The teacher read the Liberian Folktale Two Ways to Count to Ten to the class.  They  discussed what a folktale is and located Liberia on a map. In the story, King Leopard is looking for a clever animal to marry his daughter and to take his place (when the time comes, of course), and he challenges the animals of his kingdom to throw a spear in the air and count to ten before it hits the earth.  The animals all fail at the task until the Antelope arrives, and instead of counting by ones, he counts by twos!  Students munched on animal crackers while the teacher challenged them to come up with many ways to count to 20, 24, and 30.

After reading the book:  Hershey's Weights and Measures students used small Hershey's chocolates & "reptile rulers" to measure the length of some paper reptiles.
