Problem Solving Supports Continuous School Progress
The teacher gave each of her second graders a tangerine. Before starting to peel them, students estimated how many sections their tangerine would have. The next task was to see if anyone could peel the tangerine having the skin all in one piece. The teacher and two students were successful. Next, students looked at their peeled tangerines and revised their estimates about how many sections there were. Then they counted the sections. Most of them had from 9 to 11 sections.  Finally they were allowed to eat the tangerines.
