Clay Creations by SES Art Students

May-June 2008:  For the second year in a row SES students in grades 1-5 had the opportunity to make individual works of art out of clay. Each piece was formed, fired, glazed, and fired again.  Since students have art only once a week, this was a giant project lasting more than a month.

Fifth grade volunteers helped younger students made hand prints. Other students made "pinch pots."
Some classes made suns or other flat works.  Many students chose to form their own figures.

The finished pieces must be thoroughly dry before they can be fired for the first time.

To do the glazing students needed to visualize their final product and trust the
color names on the containers. The colors change during firing in the kiln.
